Pender Island
Pender Island has a great deal to offer both the full time resident and those that come for recreation. There is a bank, pharmacy, gas station, bakery, two grocery stores and 3 pubs. The many public beach accesses give the visitor a chance to visit and relax in quiet, out-of-the-way spots. Other recreation options include a nine-hole golf course with home-style meals served in the clubhouse, horseback riding, diving, kayak rentals and tours, scooter rentals, fishing and boat rentals, and many hiking trails.
North and South Pender Island are linked by a narrow wooden bridge, which spans a man-made canal separating the two islands. Public recreation areas on both sides give visitors access to an historical archeological dig, fishing, bird watching, kayak and boat launching from Mortimer Spit as well as swimming for the hardy. Much of the population lives in the Magic Lake Estates area of North Pender, a subdivision which boasts its own tennis courts and marina, a public park on Magic Lake, a baseball field and an internationally acclaimed disc park.
There are several artist-owned galleries and studios, annual Christmas craft fair, poetry readings, and exhibitions held at the Community Hall. There is also a weekly Farmers' Market and Craft Fair at the hall every Saturday from May to September.
For children, there are playgrounds at the Pender Island School, Thieves Bay picnic area, the Ball Park at Magic Lake and at the park by the Tennis Courts. As well there are many tidal pools to explore, beaches to walk on and forest to walk in. There is also a public swimming wharf at the end of Magic Lake.
Accommodation ranges from small luxury inns with their own hot tubs and ocean views to resorts, a motel, bed and breakfasts and camping.
